Yesterday, Sunday, was my first day of rabbinical school. Although
I had trouble sleeping on Saturday night and had first day of school
jitters all day yesterday, classes were pretty cool. I felt as if
I was in Jewish day school for big kids. I will post my schedule
on the website as soon as I get around to it, but I had two Hebrew
classes back to back, a Bible class, and a Liturgy class. For my
Hebrew classes, my level (Kitah Gimmel) has the head of the Hebrew
program, Zohara, who is both nice and funny. I can tell that she
will make classes very enjoyable. I then had a teacher named Ruti
for Bible who does not speak English very well and therefore speaks
verrrrrrrrrrrrry slowly. The class is also at a hard time of the
day, right before lunch, so many of us were tired during this hour
and a half. Then we had Moshe for Liturgy who we will also have
at the end of the week for rabbinic literature. Liturgy is a class
all about prayer, the style of prayers, the types of services we
will lead for all holidays and life cycle events. It is exploring
the different prayer books and learning how to lead services on
our own. This class seems fascinating to me. After class I went
power walking with Lauren and Rose which was much needed since we
were all feeling a bit overwhelmed and the weather is turning quite
nice at night. Sundays are long days where we have class until 4:15
p.m. That is a long day! Then I met up with David after he came
home from work and we went and bought a couple of my books and school
supplies. As a treat we got pit and schwarma on Ben Yehuda street
and then headed home for me to do homework and get my school supplies
ready for the rest of the week and the semester, I guess.
Today I have prayer services in the morning, Hebrew class, and
then Bible class. Luckily, I am then done for the day which will
feel really nice and really early (1:45 p.m.). Some of my friends
are taking an elective after this time but in order to have somewhat
of a life, I am only taking one elective this semester on Thursdays
and not on Mondays. Usually, Mondays are rabbinic forum days meaning
we have to stick around school for meetings until 6:00 p.m. It is
a long day but I am looking forward to seeing what my new classes
are all about. After swimming my upstairs buddy, Rose, I will come
home to relax, do some homework, and make a small dinner, since
David will be hanging out with some of the guys for Fantasy Football
Night (yeah, whatever that means! As long as he is happy!). Nice
day, I am looking forward to it!
